These Paleo Asian chicken wings are super easy to throw together and have the perfect amount of sweet and smoky flavors. They can be cooked either in the oven or air fryer if you like a little extra crisp on the edges. This is my go-to recipe whenever I have guests over because it is a guaranteed crowd-pleaser.

I have been keeping this recipe up my sleeve for a few years now. It’s one of those classic recipes that will never let me down. Last minute guests? WINGS! Have to bring a dish to a pot luck? WINGS! They come out delicious every single time and I will never get sick of it. The best part? They are super easy to throw together and I mean it. Anyone can do this from professional chef to newbie in the kitchen. No one will believe that you didn’t put that much effort into it.

What makes these Asian chicken wings paleo?

Most Asian wing recipes will include some type of soy sauce, inflammatory oil, and may even include flour and refined sugars. These wings are as pure as it gets. I use coconut sugar for the sweetness instead of traditional brown sugar and the rest of the ingredients are organic spices. I coat the wings in avocado oil, which is always my oil of choice when it comes to cooking things at a higher temperature. Other oils oxidize quickly and can contribute to inflammation in the body.

I also opt for organic and/or pasture-raised chicken wings when possible. Certified organic chickens are raised with zero antibiotics and fed organic feed. Pasture-raised chickens are allowed to roam and eat what they would naturally eat like seeds and insects. Considering the diet of the animals I eat is pretty important to me. Many chickens are fed a GMO diet, confined to small places, and given antibiotics. The closer to nature a chicken is raised and the healthier diet they are given in turn makes the chicken healthier for you as well.

dry rub and ingredients for sweet and smoky asian wings

How to make these paleo Asian chicken wings

Part of what makes these wings so easy is that they are simply coated in oil and dry rub and then thrown in the air fryer or oven to cook. The sugars in the dry rub begin to caramelize and give off the same effect as a sauce would. The inside stays juicy and the outer edges get a little bit crisp, especially in the air fryer.

To begin the process, you will lay all the wings out on a tray and pat them dry with paper towels. This will help get rid of any moisture that might prevent them from crisping up on the edges. Then you will drizzle some avocado oil and rub the oil all over the wings to coat.

After that, you will dip each wing into the dry rub which consists of coconut sugar, smoked paprika, ground ginger, sesame seeds, black pepper, salt, and garlic. Lay the wings out on a parchment-lined baking tray or throw them in the air fryer and cook at 400F for 30 minutes, flipping halfway through.

When they are done you can top them with some extra sesame seeds and green onion and bon apetit! Just like that, you have some finger-licking good sweet and smoky Asian wings.
